Adult Literacy – Improving English Skills

Bloomsburg Public Library now offers free English as a Second Language (ESL) help to adults improve their skills and develop confidence speaking English. Our program has two parts: One-on-One lessons and Conversation Hours.  Students may decide to participate in both programs or just one part. 

One-on-One English Lessons

The Library matches an adult student with a volunteer who meets with the student at least two time per week to work on lessons to improve reading, writing, and speaking skills. Students meet with their teacher at the Library or other public place.  Lessons do not take place in private homes.

All learning materials  are free for the student.

English Conversation Hour

We offer casual, small-group sessions for adults who would like to practice speaking English.  Learn with friends!  Speaking practice is easy and for everyone.  Just come and practice English. 

Our English as a Second Language and Adult Literacy Program is affiliated with Pro-Literacy America.

Adult Basic Education

These 1-on-1 tutorials cover the fundamentals of reading and writing for native speakers of English. We match adult learners with a volunteer.

English as a Second Language

These 1-on-1 and small group sessions cover the fundamentals of English conversation, reading, writing, and comprehension.  

Interested in becoming an Adult Literacy Tutor?

Please call the Library at 570-784-0883 and ask to speak with C.A. Bastian. Tutors receive coaching from the library staff and we provide all teaching materials. 

Volunteer Eligibility

To be eligible to volunteer you must:

  • Be at least 22 years of age
  • Have the ability to read and write English
  • Be willing to commit to a minimum of 2 hours of tutoring per week  for at least 6 months
  • Attend Bloomsburg Public Library’s tutor training program 

Free Tutoring for:

  • English language learners
  • Reading and Writing for Adults

This program offers one-on-one tutoring sessions that take place at the library.  Each student is matched to a volunteer teacher/coach.
